At Jeavons Wood, we believe every child should have a voice in shaping our school. That’s why we use Smart School Council, ensuring all pupils can take part in meaningful discussions and decision‑making. To support this, we appoint a Year 5 Communication Team each year. Children apply for the roles, and the outgoing team interviews, selects, and trains their successors—building continuity and leadership skills.
Our Communication Team is made up of five pupil leaders:
- Tech Lead – manages the live class meetings platform and collates responses using their individual login.
- Question Finder – gathers ideas from pupils and staff to create thoughtful, progressive questions that help drive school improvement.
- Staff Liaison – confidently communicates with staff, reminding them about class meetings and sharing ideas with the Senior Leadership Team.
- Progress Board Updater – maintains the display outside the school hall, keeping everyone informed about current projects, progress made, and decisions that cannot be taken forward (and why).
- Action Team Developer – organises pupil teams from across the school to work on projects, ensuring that change is driven by many children, not just a small group.
To involve all pupils, each class holds a monthly meeting based around a whole‑school question. Children work in small groups with adult support, and each group has a nominated child meeting leader and note‑taker who guide the discussion. This approach allows every child to contribute equally, helping us gather a wide range of views and ideas. It has become a powerful way to shape future projects and make quick, meaningful improvements to school life.
